Do I need a Memos server?

No. Tap Start Writing the first time you open the app, and your memos stay on this iPhone. When you want them in sync, tap Connect a Memos Server in Settings: the memos you have become that account's, and nothing is uploaded on its own.

What kind of server do I need?

Memos 0.27 to 0.31, run by you or by someone for you. HTTPS is recommended; a server that offers only HTTP on a private network works too, but content travels unencrypted and the app tells you so. Newer versions connect as well, they just haven't been tested yet; older ones are asked to upgrade first.

The app can't reach my server. What can I do?

Enter just the address, such as memos.example.com, without https://. When it can't connect, the app says why and what to check; then tap Try Again.

Where do memos written offline go?

They're saved on your iPhone, marked Unsent, and sent once you're online. One that can't be sent is marked Couldn't Send with the reason, and can be edited or retried in Settings → Sync.

What does This iPhone Only mean?

With a server connected, visibility has one more choice, This iPhone Only: the memo stays on this iPhone and is never uploaded. Change it to another visibility to send it to the server, or send them all at once in Settings → Sync.

New phone, or lost it: are my memos still there?

Memos on a server stay on the server; sign in on the new phone and they come back. Memos kept on the iPhone alone go with your iPhone's iCloud or computer backup, so restore the new phone from it; you can also keep a copy anytime with Export All Memos in Settings. CapMemos itself does no cloud syncing.

What does Edited in Two Places mean?

While you changed a memo, it was also changed somewhere else, on the web for example. The app doesn't overwrite either: it puts both versions side by side for you to keep one, and saves the other as a draft.

There's a new access token called “CapMemos · device name” on my server?

That's this iPhone's own sign-in. Signing out in the app deletes the copy on this iPhone; cancelling it on the server is a separate step: the app asks the server to, but without a connection, or if the server fails, it may not happen. If you signed in by pasting your own access token, the app doesn't cancel it at all. Whatever wasn't cancelled, or a phone erased without signing out, you can delete by hand in the access token settings of the Memos web app.

What does signing out or removing an account delete?

The account's memos, drafts, images waiting to upload and image cache on this iPhone; memos on the server are untouched. Two things stay: memos marked This iPhone Only, and memos and images shared to this account but not yet put into its library. Those are never passed to another account by themselves: they appear under Settings → Sync, for you to put into the current account or delete.

When I dictate, where do the sound and the words go?

On iPhone, your voice becomes text on the device; nothing is uploaded and no recording is kept. While you speak, the Dynamic Island and the Lock Screen show the time and the latest words, readable without unlocking; to keep them off the Lock Screen, turn off Live Activities for CapMemos in the system Settings. On Apple Watch, the watch's own system dictation is used, which may go through Apple's servers; the text is kept on the watch, and after it reaches your iPhone the watch keeps the latest 20 (for up to a week) to show they arrived.

Is CapMemos made by the Memos project?

No. CapMemos is an independent app and is not affiliated with the Memos project.

Write to support@capmemos.com. It helps most to attach a report: in the app, go to Settings → Diagnostics and tap Share. It contains versions, sync state, why memos couldn't be sent and a log. Memo text, user names, server addresses and sign-in details are taken out as far as possible, but no filter catches everything: read the report through before sharing it, and leave out anything you'd rather not send. Please also tell us which version of Memos your server runs.
